Gekisai Dai Ichi

Gekisai Dai Ichi kanji

Gekisai means "attack and smash". They were created by Chojun Miyagi in 1940 and are beginner's kata, the first to be learned in some styles. Miyagi Sensei felt that he needed some simpler katas to introduct karate to school children.

The Gekisai's are unique in a couple of ways. Gekisai Dai Ichi is the only kata in Goju that ends by stepping forward rather than backwards. Both katas include a high block that is unique to Goju. Miyagi Sensei wanted to include the high block, the first and fourth move in both katas into Goju. No other Goju kata contain these blocks.
